June 2023

I explored the impacts of masculinity stereotypes on gay culture through researching the gender expressions of Chinese and British gay men and analysed the male body image problem of myself and others. I created a short film and a research publication, trying to reveal the binary gender structure imposed on queer groups by heterosexual society and criticise contemporary Chinese gay culture fetishes masculinity above all else.

PART 1

Adonis’ wonderland

Short Film

Adonis, the Greek god, whose body represented an exquisite standard of masculinity.

The story tells that I imagined I have become Adonis, with the perfect and the most popular body, all the genitals in the wonderland are served for me. However, I suddenly recalled my struggling past, and flashback how I have become Adonis.

PART 2

Adonis & I

Reach Publication

This research booklet explained the origin of the Adonis complex: the male body image problem, detailed my exploration of gender identity, and documented some interviews. It also examines how contemporary Chinese gay culture fetishes masculinity above all else, and how it influences gay men like me, who do not conform to this stereotype.
